0:00 We're going to say a prayer today.
0:05 >> Imagine you were to conk out completely,
0:09 not know what's going on, just
0:14 in the middle of your daily routine in a
0:17 small town named [music] Larkin. What
0:19 would you do if you found out that hours
0:21 of time had passed and something even
0:23 more nefarious was the culprit? Well, we
0:26 got a movie for you this week. It's
0:28 found footage. Let's get into it.
0:35 [music]
0:42 What's up, guys? And welcome back to
0:44 Beyond the Void. My name is Alex, and
0:46 today we're going to be doing a
0:48 spoiler-free review of Man Finds Tape.
0:54 Yeah, it's a movie about a guy who finds
0:57 a tape and that's it. Not really.
1:00 Actually, it's a name of a movie about a
1:04 guy who did find a tape though. And in
1:07 this tape, he finds a child, which is
1:10 him 20 years earlier being fed something
1:13 in the middle of the night. And he has
1:15 no idea what is going on. And he doesn't
1:18 remember this happening whatsoever. And
1:21 uh that unfolds this crazy story that
1:24 everybody is like basically walking
1:27 around not knowing what they're doing.
1:28 But yeah, I got to check this one out. I
1:32 saw that it was up on VOD and in
1:34 theaters. It's in limited release
1:36 theaters right now as well as VOD. So if
1:38 you choose to go see it in the theater,
1:40 you can. It's a found footage film
1:42 that's done much like a documentary. And
1:44 it's written by and directed by Paul
1:48 Gandersman and Peter S. Paul who both
1:51 are producers predominantly who've done
1:53 a lot of work and producing films but
1:57 are doing directorial uh film on this
2:00 one. I think this is their first
2:01 featurelength film too. But essentially
2:04 this is about a brother and a sister who
2:05 are siblings who grew up in this house.
2:07 their family had befallen some sort of
2:10 weird thing where they too were conking
2:13 out and didn't realize what was going on
2:15 with losing time and suddenly they're
2:18 split apart because the sister was not
2:21 wanting to stay in that town in that
2:23 house where all this bad stuff happened
2:26 and the brother stayed and ended up
2:28 finding this tape starting a YouTube
2:30 channel and it became a huge hit because
2:33 he's like uncovering this weird crazy
2:36 mystery
2:37 And then he finds a another tape of some
2:40 people walking out in the middle of the
2:41 street getting run over and it's just
2:43 like what is going on in this small
2:47 little town. And yes, they do it just
2:50 like they do a lot of these films where
2:51 they do the documentary in the beginning
2:53 of the movie and it just kind of goes
2:56 into whatever else is happening in this
2:58 movie which I can tell you by the end of
3:01 this movie you are not going to guess
3:03 what the [ __ ] is going on in this movie.
3:06 Let me tell you [laughter] now, I did
3:08 get some notes and vibes of like
3:10 Borderlands, if you ever saw that found
3:12 footage movie slashf final prayer. And
3:16 while that may make a lot of you who
3:18 like that movie jump up, it's just
3:20 reminiscent. It's not like it, there is
3:24 a thing about this movie that I was not
3:26 really a fond of, but I'll get to that
3:28 in just a little bit. First of all, the
3:30 acting in this movie is tolerable. It is
3:33 definitely above average in some
3:35 regards, but kind of teetering on some
3:37 of the space in between. You know,
3:39 there's always like that thing with
3:41 found footage that people have a
3:42 tolerance or threshold for of just bad
3:45 acting or not. And everybody's a little
3:49 bit different because found footage is
3:50 just like that. Some found footage guys,
3:53 I always mention it, they hate the
3:54 sounds. They don't want to hear like,
3:56 you know, horror music or anything like
3:58 that. And I can't for the life of
4:01 remember if there was music in it. I
4:03 believe that there was. Sorry. I I I
4:05 wish I would have paid more attention,
4:07 but this one was a really hard one to
4:08 stick with. While I like some of the
4:11 story elements and where this goes by
4:13 the end of the movie, I was very
4:15 underwhelmed by where it ended up and
4:19 how it handled it. There is something
4:21 that I really prefer in these types of
4:24 movies. I don't mind how they do the the
4:28 found footage aspect, whether it's a
4:30 documentary in the beginning or
4:32 something else or like you're living it.
4:34 It doesn't matter to me so much. It's
4:36 more like is the acting tolerable? If
4:39 it's tolerable, I'm pretty forgiving of
4:41 that. If the story is really good, but
4:44 if the vibe isn't there and there isn't
4:47 some sort of element of unsettled like
4:49 stuff going on, then really it's just
4:52 kind of an empty I don't know
4:54 interesting story. And that's kind of
4:56 what I got here. you know, like they do
4:58 have this lore and stuff that they spent
5:01 some extra time kind of working [music]
5:02 with, and where it goes is pretty unique
5:05 in in a lot of ways, but it also is kind
5:08 of like I'm not sure I'm really getting
5:11 into it vibewise, atmosphere-wise.
5:14 It just could have gone so much more
5:17 because just like the movie Dream Eater,
5:19 which is another found footage movie I
5:21 just recently reviewed, you should check
5:24 out. [laughter]
5:25 It also has a good concept, but didn't
5:28 really bring the vibes in it. Now, I'd
5:30 say the vibes in that other movie were
5:33 much better than this one. This one has
5:35 a better concept overall. So, they're
5:38 almost kind of the same, you know, but a
5:42 little bit different. This one feels a
5:44 little bit better produced or made, even
5:47 though the other one is kind of a little
5:49 bit more scarier, but they both kind of
5:52 trade each other's stuff. I really wish
5:54 that this one would have had the vibe
5:57 and the atmosphere that that you would
5:59 think with a group of people just kind
6:01 of like nodding off, you'd think that
6:03 there was something like otherworldly
6:05 going on dimensionally or whatever it is
6:09 and they do something different that I
6:11 got to applaud for being really weird
6:13 and kind of cool, but it also just
6:16 slumps over it. And and the crazy thing
6:18 is is that one of the producers, which
6:20 there are many executive producers on
6:22 this film, are Aaron Morehead and Justin
6:25 Benson, who have done films like
6:27 Resolution
6:28 and many other films that have just like
6:31 this really indie indie indie story with
6:34 a lot of really crazy, unique, and
6:36 interesting ways to spin a story and
6:40 also do it technically on the screen to
6:42 make you wowed by what they've done in
6:45 their sort of um CGI or camera or film
6:49 prowess that is absent in this movie.
6:52 They have a lot of vibe movies while
6:54 this one does not. I don't think that's
6:57 necessarily their fault or anything.
6:58 It's just how the story kind of got
7:00 conveyed. I don't know what was missing
7:03 there that just didn't push it over into
7:06 that range. I was really hoping for it.
7:09 I'm a big fan of uh Justin Benson and
7:12 Aaron Morehead. I love their movies. I
7:14 have all of them just about. Even even
7:17 the ones I don't like, I still have this
7:19 admiration for it because there's a
7:21 sense of vibe, a sense of awe and
7:24 mystery that's really going on that
7:26 really makes you want to sink your teeth
7:28 into. And I just didn't feel like I
7:30 needed to sink my teeth [music] in too
7:31 deep into this one, even though it did
7:33 have a few surprises by the end. I hope
7:36 that kind of helps make a better
7:38 understanding of the film. It's not so
7:40 much that these people are incapable of
7:42 doing that. But I feel like they could
7:44 in the future if they ironed out a few
7:46 things. But there is just that absence
7:49 of vibe in there that [music] really
7:50 just took me out of the picture and kind
7:53 of made it of a boring somewhat bland
7:56 experience. Even if it is in a higher
7:58 quality bracket of indie film making,
8:02 not a mainstream film. Even though it
8:04 has kind of like a cover that looks very
8:06 mainstreamy, it feels a little bit more
8:09 indie indie. But I think they did a
8:12 fairly decent job in some aspects while
8:14 just kind of, you know, the dismount was
8:16 just not there. I wouldn't say this is a
8:18 scary movie and I would highly recommend
8:20 you wait till streaming on this one.
8:22 Unfortunately, I really try to root for
8:25 all these kind of indie films and I
8:26 really mostly watch indie films on this
8:29 channel for you guys to find stuff that
8:32 you might enjoy. But, you know, there's
8:34 always a found footage movie that I love
8:36 that some of you guys all hate. And I
8:39 got a video coming up with some of my
8:41 hot takes in horror. So, uh, you'll be
8:44 on the lookout for that, I hope.
8:45 [laughter]
8:46 But yes, I would love to hear what you
8:48 think about this concept. You know, the
8:50 idea that this guy finds a tape and then
8:53 starts a whole like, you know,
8:55 investigation into it. It kind of mixes
8:58 up his sister and then twists her into
9:00 not wanting to be a part of it. And then
9:02 she comes out there to find him back in
9:06 investigating this really weird thing
9:08 that's having weird occurrences in town
9:10 where people are just snapping out of it
9:13 is very interesting on the surface, but
9:16 there is just not a lot there to really
9:18 warrant a great film. I would probably
9:21 give this one about a 5.5
9:24 out of 10. About the same as Dream
9:26 Eater. I don't know. It's somewhere
9:29 around there. It's above average in some
9:31 respects, but I would highly recommend
9:33 you wait to stream it to see for
9:36 yourself. And if you end up liking it,
9:38 hey, that's even better. But yeah,
9:39 that's just my opinion. These are just
9:41 my thoughts. I'm just one guy in a big
9:44 pool of individuals that love found
9:46 footage or like found footage or hate
9:50 it. I don't know. It seems like
9:51 everybody has their own thing about it.
9:53 But yeah, I would love to hear what you
9:54 think in the comments section down
9:56 below. Let me know what you think of the
9:57 concept and all of that. And if you're
9:59 going to go to the theater or rent this
10:00 one, it's out now on VOD if you want to
10:03 pick it up or in some select theaters.
10:05 Thanks for coming by. I'm glad to be
10:07 back home. And as always, long live the
10:14 [music]
10:19 Heat. [music]
